Any Users of "My Engineer on Call"?

Fri, 05/31/2013 - 04:55
I am looking for anyone (NACHI member or otherwise) who might be providing engineering services to their clients through this site.

It is being promoted as a means of increasing income of home inspectors who are willing to pay a licensed engineer for his expertise regarding structural issues discovered during a home inspection and reselling the information to his client or contractor, among other services.

According to its promoters, after you receive an Engineer's Technician Certification, you will be eligible to resell engineering services to your clients. You are reported to be able to evaluate field conditions and to offer engineering solutions to clients and contractors.

Surprise - someone forgot to check water shut-off's

Fri, 05/31/2013 - 04:50
Inspected a banked own home today that had it's water turned on last weekend. When I entered the home (6-days later) I heard right away sounds of water running. Walked into the kitchen to find water dripping out of cabinet below sink and the entire floor area in front of the sink was submerged in water. Immediately went to basement and found extensive water damage. The suspended ceiling "Dropped", finished walls soaked, basement floor flooded, electrical service panel cover was dripping wet. Cause of the flooding was the supply hose to the dishwasher was removed and shut-off was not capped, valve had a slow trickle in closed position. I hate to be the company or individual responsible to explain what happen. My client stopped inspection before it started. I still got paid and gave credit towards next inspection.

message board search

Thu, 05/30/2013 - 13:57
Is there a way to change the mb search. I just read a post that there are 81,000 new posts, which I am sure is full of great information. But I have had troubles searching and finding what I want. For example, the other day I was looking for Info on log homes, but apparently log is too short a word to use in the search function. I am guessing that the search is part of the program or what ever that is used to make the mb, as i have had this issue with lots of mb. Thanks for looking at this.

Flexiloy

Thu, 05/30/2013 - 10:29
I just looked at a manufactured home built in 2001. Some of the plumbing piping was gray and the word "FLEXILOY" was imprinted on the piping. Other piping in the home was PEX. Is FLEXILOY part of the PB issue?

Thanks in advance all for the assistance.

What if you expect Chinese drywall?

Thu, 05/30/2013 - 07:39
I have an inspection on Tuesday and the buyer has warned me that there is black copper present. I recently accomplished the Chinese drywall course and I feel confident that I will be able to get an idea if there is Chinese drywall present. But what if there is? Reporting/inspecting for this kind of situation isn’t part of the SOP’s but since he has warned me on the issue I will have to “report what I see” but recommend what next? Who would he contact to fix/further investigate? It is a short sale.
Do you do Chinese drywall inspections? If so, what do you charge? The course teaches you how to go room to room and inspect the attic which would take a long time. Just curious how you charge for this inspection as it could be timely.

Sub has breakers installed at angle

Thu, 05/30/2013 - 04:23
It appeared that these two breakers were installed for the sales office in the garage as this was a former Ryland model home. I could not tell if they were still being used. Besides overloading the space is there some other violation here? There was no breaker id.
Also a Siemens main was used with a Square D sub. Does that fly or does it just depend?

Hot water circuit breaker

Wed, 05/29/2013 - 06:59
What do you do when you run into a house where the water heater circuit breaker is off? Do you flip the beaker? Do you check that the water supply valves are open? Or do you document what you see? Such as, “breaker was off and unit was not tested”?
