Standards of Practice comparison in Canada - Driveways
Hi there, I am new to interNachi and have been comparing the standards of practice with other organizations in Canada, namely, Cahpi and Cannachi. Is there any particular reason why walkways, patios, and driveways are not mentioned in the Standards of Practice?
I am located in Newfoundland so not subject to licensing or any particular standards that I am aware of. I began my training in BC, and all of the recognized associations require inspection of driveways, walkways and patios.
I think it is reasonable of my clients to expect comment on any defects in driveways and walkways that present a hazard.
Any thoughts?
Please advise if there are any other significant differences with comparable organizations in Canada.

Fault diagnosis - treasure hunt?
I am starting to post a series of fault-diagnosis photos on the OntarioACHI message board.
These are aimed at the newer Inspectors in Ontario and will have a period for answers, which I will not comment on, with a follow-up post sometime later with more clues to the original problem and the resolution I took.

Gas line bonding
The NEC says that all metal piping must be bonded back to electrical service. I am looking for some feedback on if the gas line needs to be bonded. There is alot of different opinions of this but if I read the NEC correct this needs to be done.
HVAC unit - air blowing out of cabinet
Hi all,
Found an odd situation today, we found a significant amount of air blowing out of the air handler cabinet but not where its supposed to.
The air was blowing out of the port in the photo to the immediate right of the condensate line (white) and around the suction line opening.
I've never found this before. Any ideas?
Tom

inspector only ???? where??
Is there any place on these boards where inspectors can talk to inspectors about inspection issues and business without having public adjusters and used car salesman constantly interjecting in our conversations.?
Just wondering as when I joined ( with no regrets I might add) I hadn't idea that the underemployed, pissed off at the world inspectors and public adjusters as well as used car salesmen would interject like vipers and ruin most intelligent conversations that get started here.... Am I missing something or are these members who I will always have to weed my way through to find the professionalism and wisdom I came here seeking ...... Wow, I feel much better now...

Bathroom wiring problems
Will code allow for the following:
House was built in 1973 and has seen no upgrades.
Breaker #9 (15amp) handles two half baths (lights, fans and GFI rec) as well as family room lights and receptacles and living room receptacles (approximately 12 combined).
I know code would not allow that today but was this proper back when the house was built and is it ok to leave it?
Thanks.

When a Home Inspector Sells His Clients' Contact Information ...
... to a third party, in exchange for services to grow his business --- in addition to his clients' permission, should the inspector disclose to his client (1) the fact that he is getting something of value in exchange for the contact information and (2) that he is being paid a commission when his client purchases from the third party?
Or should these facts be concealed from his client?

Z5 Spore Cassettes.
Wound up with 350 extra Z5 traps after a huge camp job went south on me. Paid $5.00 a piece for them after shipping. Will sell for $4.00 a piece + free shipping (Or best offer) if you buy a case of 50. They expire in August so let me know.

Any Users of "My Engineer on Call"?
I am looking for anyone (NACHI member or otherwise) who might be providing engineering services to their clients through this site.
It is being promoted as a means of increasing income of home inspectors who are willing to pay a licensed engineer for his expertise regarding structural issues discovered during a home inspection and reselling the information to his client or contractor, among other services.
According to its promoters, after you receive an Engineer's Technician Certification, you will be eligible to resell engineering services to your clients. You are reported to be able to evaluate field conditions and to offer engineering solutions to clients and contractors.

Surprise - someone forgot to check water shut-off's
Inspected a banked own home today that had it's water turned on last weekend. When I entered the home (6-days later) I heard right away sounds of water running. Walked into the kitchen to find water dripping out of cabinet below sink and the entire floor area in front of the sink was submerged in water. Immediately went to basement and found extensive water damage. The suspended ceiling "Dropped", finished walls soaked, basement floor flooded, electrical service panel cover was dripping wet. Cause of the flooding was the supply hose to the dishwasher was removed and shut-off was not capped, valve had a slow trickle in closed position. I hate to be the company or individual responsible to explain what happen. My client stopped inspection before it started. I still got paid and gave credit towards next inspection.
